What's the difference between the COVID-19 variants? - KFYR-TV

Image
BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - Viruses survive because they adapt, and coronavirus is no different. We've heard a lot about variants recently. We spoke with an infectious disease consultant to find out what makes one different from another. The CDC says viruses constantly change through mutation, and new variants are expected to occur. Sometimes new variants emerge and disappear. Other times, the new strains persist. Sanford Health Infectious Disease Consultant Dr. Noe Mateo says the variants differ in their ability to spread from person to person and their ability to cause illness. "There's a different risk as to whether you're going to be sick enough to be hospitalized, or have to come into an intensive care unit, depending on what your interaction is with your immune system with these new variants," said Dr. Mateo. Dr. Mateo says there is a variant that is becoming more important and more widespread. "The Delta that the World Health Organization and

Dog bite dilemma - The Express Tribune

Letter June 23, 2021 Despite vaccinating 300,000 stray dogs through a rabies control programme conducted in Karachi, 7,000 cases of dog bite have been reported till date KARACHI: Dog bite dilemma Vaccinating stray dogs has not yet proven to be an effective way to control the surging cases of rabies-infected people because these dogs are reproducing at a much faster rate. Despite vaccinating 300,000 stray dogs through a rabies control programme conducted in Karachi, 7,000 cases of dog bite have been reported till date. This concern, therefore, needs extra attention from the provincial government. The average lifespan of a dog ranges from 10 to 13 years. A stray dog reaches its reproduction age at about 6 to 12 months. The gestation period is around 58 to 68 days, and an average litter of a dog consists of about six puppies. Hence, reproduction rate is fast and the strategy of mass vaccination of dogs to prevent the transmission of the rabies infection can never be fruitfu

Dog Bites on the Rise, Local Trainer Offers Tips - DiscoverMooseJaw.com - DiscoverMooseJaw.com

Gary Overs, the owner of Gary Overs Kenneling and Obedience, says he's fielding calls almost daily about dog bites, but it isn't coming as a complete surprise.  While the COVID-19 pandemic seems like the perfect time to get a dog for many people, Overs says that it can be the exact opposite.  "It was a horrible time to socialize a dog because we are all in isolation so to speak. We're staying away from each other so puppies were not experiencing socialization outside of the home or the family," Overs explains.  Now that things are opening up and people are spending more time socializing outside, the number of people going to the emergency room for dog bites is also increasing. Overs says dogs will bite in these situations, not because they are aggressive, but because they are scared. He adds that dogs have two instincts when they are scared, fight or flight.  Some warning signs that your dog is in an uncomfortable situation is the dog will start pulling ba

How immune cells can be trained to fight infections: Discovery may allow doctors to 'hack' the immune system to strengthen it - Science Daily

Image
The body's immune cells naturally fight off viral and bacterial microbes and other invaders, but they can also be reprogrammed or "trained" to respond even more aggressively and potently to such threats, report UCLA scientists who have discovered the fundamental rule underlying this process in a particular class of cells. In a study published June 18 in the journal Science , the researchers identified a key molecular mechanism within macrophages, infection-fighting cells of the innate immune system, that determines whether -- and how well -- the cells can be trained. Their findings could help pave the way for future targeted strategies to enhance the function of the immune system. "Like a soldier or an athlete, innate immune cells can be trained by past experiences to become better at fighting infections," said lead author Quen Cheng, an assistant clinical professor of infectious diseases at UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine. However, he noted, the

Cat Bites May Lead to Infections: Treatment and When to Get Help - Healthline

Though cats are soft and cuddly, they may bite or scratch when they're spooked. When a cat bites, it may not seem like a big deal — it can be cute when they're playing — but some cat bites can pose significant health risks. Cats carry many bacteria in their mouths capable of causing infections in bite wounds. Though house cats are often vaccinated against the most serious diseases, like rabies, stray cats aren't usually vaccinated and can carry several diseases. In fact, the infection rate from a cat bite is fairly high. According to a 2018 research review, infection occurs in about 50 percent of cat bites in children. Roughly 400,000 cat bites occur in the United States each year. Cat bites with infections can become not only painful, but also red or discolored, and swollen. If left untreated, cat bite infections can spread to other parts of the body, causing a condition called septicemia (blood poisoning), which requires hospitalization. In rare cases, these

How to Stop Your Dogs From Scavenging - The Bark

Image
The Bark's advice columnist answers readers' questions about canine behavior. Got a question for The Bark? Email askbark@thebark.com Dogs are scavengers—there's no pretending otherwise. Some dogs embrace their scavenger nature more than others, becoming extreme practitioners of the lifestyle. If your dog is serious about searching out food (and even things that are most definitely not food) and snarfing it down, you know how scary that can be. If the item she swallows is either toxic or causes an intestinal blockage, it can mean an expensive vet visit. But far more importantly, it's dangerous, which is why it is essential to have some answers to the question, "How do I get my dog to stop eating everything?" You can't stop people from littering and you can't control nature, so fast-food wrappers, chicken bones, toxic nuts, dead birds, rotting sticks and barely buried cat poo will always be around. What you can do is protect your dog from the dangers

Rabid Dog Imported Into U.S., At Least 12 People Exposed - Forbes

(Photo by Gavriil Grigorov\TASS via Getty Images) Gavriil Grigorov/TASS Who let the dog in? Since dog rabies has essentially been eliminated from the U.S. since 2007, it's been really important to keep out of the U.S. any dogs who may be carrying the dog rabies virus. Remember a dog's threshold for licking others tends to be lower than a human's threshold to do the same, well at least most humans' thresholds. It takes only one dog biting, licking, and doing unspeakable things to other animals to re-introduce this nasty version of the virus back in the country. And no one wants this bad news virus back in the U.S., except for maybe the virus. That's why every case of a rabid dog has to be taken super-seriously. Since 2015, only three rabid dogs had made it into the U.S. before this month. And now the
