Mountain lion will not be euthanized, NPS says By Sam Catanzaro During the evening of November 9, a large animal attacked a small dog while it was being walked on a leash near the Hollywood Reservoir. The National Park Service has confirmed that mountain lion P-22 was the animal responsible for the attack. The agency has announced it will not be euthanizing P-22, saying its behavior was "not atypical" during this incident, the first of its kind in the Los Angeles area.  "Based on video footage and GPS tracking collar data, we can confirm P-22 was the animal responsible for the attack. We understand an incident like this is upsetting and can possibly heighten people's concern for the safety of their pets and themselves. We also want to express our sympathies to the dog owner," the NPS said. The agency said pets that eat food with the drug can experience symptoms such as drowsiness, dizziness, excitement, a loss of balance and a...

Why Does My Puppy Growl at Strangers? – American Kennel Club - American Kennel Club

Image
Puppies are known for being wiggly, cuddly bundles of love. They adore everybody, right? Wrong. Some puppies are friendly to everyone they meet, but others are uncomfortable around strangers and may even growl at them. But what does the growling mean? Is it aggression or is there something else going on? Grumbling at strangers is a sign that something is wrong, and the most likely explanation is the puppy is fearful of people they don't know. Dogs Growl to Communicate Growling seems like an aggressive act. After all, it usually precedes a bite. But, at its core, growling is about communication. Dogs growl to indicate they're unhappy, uncomfortable, or even fearful about a particular situation. For example, if another dog comes too close, your dog might growl to say, "Back off, you're intruding in my personal space." The point is to get the other dog to move before things escalate. Because growling is a warning, it gives you time to change the sit...

Book Claims Biden Has Trust Issues with Some Secret Service Agents - PEOPLE

Image
As the first family's German shepherd rescue dog Major made headlines in 2021 due to a "biting incident" involving a member of White House security, the president was allegedly unconvinced that Secret Service agents told the truth about what happened. That's according to a new book by Chris Whipple, The Fight of His Life: Inside Joe Biden's White House , which claims that Biden "wasn't buying the details" of the incident, according to The Hill , which obtained a copy of the book. "Somebody was lying, Biden thought, about the way the incident had gone down," Whipple writes in the book, per The Hill . One of the reasons for Biden's skepticism, Whipple says, is that the area of the White House where Major reportedly injured an agent is somewhere that Secret Service rarely goes. The Bidens adopted Major from the Delaware Humane Association in 2018, and temporarily relocated the dog back to their home in Delawar...

Opinion | Myths about Indie (community) dogs - Opinions & Blogs ... - WION

Image
All indie dogs are mad: Rabies is a viral disease. Surely, not every dog on every road in India has rabies. Also, there is no evidence to state that Indie dogs are aggressive as such. They are only protective; like every living being should be. They are bound to get angry when we hurt them or interfere in their lives. It is essential self-defence. This can, to no extent, be presumed as a dangerous trait. Media never leaves an opportunity to project indie dogs as vile, ruthless creatures hungry for your blood. What is the basis for these claims? Cases of dog bites? By that analogy, we should be declared the most dangerous species on the planet unanimously. No news of stray dogs being mauled and poisoned to death makes it to the trending section. This steers to us believe that stray dogs are enjoying their lives on the street, killing people for fun. That isn't true. If the travesty written about India's street dogs across the media is true, they would be ruling the planet. But a...

Advice | Ask Damon: How do I tell my friends their dogs need better ... - The Washington Post

Image
Hi Damon: I need to know how not to insult or ostracize pet-owning friends when I visit their homes. Some love their dogs so much that they are willfully oblivious to the bad behavior caused by zero training. I am rushed immediately upon entering either by a large dog leaping up at me, the gross slobbering on and licking of my extremities or a nose directly to the crotch; none of which is restrained or controlled, all of which I despise. Whenever I have said something about actions like this in the past to other people, I have been met with either indignant astonishment ("you don't like DOGS?") or clueless denial ("Fido is very friendly" or "Junior is so protective of me"). For the record, I am not afraid of dogs — just potentially unsafe unruly behavior. My standards are such: when a live being shoves its way into my undercarriage, it is by invitation only; otherwise, it is assault. If an unleashed dog did this to me on the street, I would have no he...

Clinical record A 44‐year‐old man presented to the emergency department with left knee monoarthritis; he had a history of tobacco dependence and no known cardiac disease. At presentation, he was systemically well, with normal observations and no fever. Examination revealed a moderate sized left knee effusion. Aspirate revealed 3000 × 10 6 /L leucocytes (reference interval, < 200 × 10 6 /L), negative Gram stain, and no signs of crystal arthropathy. The patient was subsequently discharged with a plan for further outpatient workup; however, he re‐presented a week later with ongoing left knee arthralgia, rigors, and a fever of 38.2°C. Diagnosed provisionally with septic arthritis, he was managed under the orthopaedic team with surgical washout and empirical intravenous (IV) ceftriaxone. Surgical joint aspirate was again culture‐negative; however, a subsequent enrichment culture and a single blood culture grew Streptobacillus moniliformis at 63 hours. Antibiotics were promptly switc...

The 20 Best Movie Santas, Ranked - Vulture

Image
Photo-Illustration: Vulture; Photos: Buena Vista Pictures Distribution, Getty, Sony Pictures Television, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures, For a figure with a pop-cultural image shaped in large part by Coca-Cola commercials, Santa Claus has a surprising range. His mythology has become almost completely secularized — his origin as a Christian saint replaced with jolly whole-cloth hokum. He can be an immortal demigod who pals around with Merlin and Jesus, the harried CEO of a toy-manufacturing company based at the North Pole, or the dignified figurehead of a hereditary monarchy whose title is passed down through the generations. He can have different levels of magical power — from godlike omniscience to a Batman-like dependency on gadgetry. He can be tall or short, fat or thin. He is almost always portraye...
