6 Health Tips on Stopping the Airborne-Spread Diseases We Should Follow - The Southern Maryland Chronicle

Image
We live in an era when pandemics can spread with unprecedented speed, aided by modern transportation and the ever-growing global population. One of the ways diseases can spread is through the air. This makes them especially difficult to contain, as they can travel long distances and affect a large number of people. In order to help stop the spread of airborne-spread diseases, we should all follow these six essential health tips. 1. Wear A Face Mask In Public We all know of the "big" diseases that can be spread through the air – things like the flu, tuberculosis, and Covid. Rat infestation in Washington DC has produced two cases of rare virus infection - ZME Science

Image
Washington, DC, has a rat problem. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), this has led to the emergence of the first two official cases of hantavirus in humans in the city. Image credits Wolfgang Vogt. Wildlife has its own share of viruses and pathogens to deal with, as do people. Sometimes, however, when these two groups live in close proximity, pathogens can evolve to cross from one to the other. When this takes place from wildlife or livestock to humans, this is known as zoonosis. The coronavirus pandemic started as a zoonosis. One genus of viruses that can comfortably infect both rodents and humans is known as orthohantavirus, or simply hantaviruses. These are widespread through rodent populations such as city rats, where they cause asymptomatic infections. However, people can become infected with these viruses as well, most commonly through exposure to rat urine or feces, although saliva or bit

Combine and Conquer: A Treatment Strategy to Combat Drug-Use Associated Infections - Infectious Disease Advisor

Image
Treatment for substance use disorders (SUD) and infectious disease (ID) has traditionally been viewed as the individual responsibility of mental health professionals and ID physicians, respectively. However, the need for an integrated treatment approach has become clear as rates of infectious diseases related to injection drug use (IDU) continue to surge due to the ongoing opioid epidemic in the United States. Significant increases in HIV, hepatitis C virus (HCV), and various invasive bacterial and fungal infections have been attributed to this surge in IDU. 1 Results of a recent study published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases observed increases in hospitalizations for drug-use associated infective endocarditis (DUA-IE; 33%), osteomyelitis (35%), sepsis (24%), and skin, soft tissue, and venous infections (12%) in Michigan between 2016 and 2018, with an associated cost of $1.3 billion. 2 In a 2019 study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine , findin

Local doctors declared that the women died due to rabies. Though cats carry the rabies germs in them, it is rare that people die of rabies through cat bites. The most common cause of rabies in humans is a bite by rabid dogs. The police have identified the victims as RTC bus conductor Sally Bhagya Rao's wife Kamala (64) and rural medical practitioner Boddu Babu Rao's wife Nagmani (43). They are residents of Vemulamada colony in Krishna district. After the cat attack, they went to a hospital where the doctor administered anti tetanus shot. The doctor did not expect the cat to be rabid. However, four days ago, Kamala and Nagmani were admitted to hospital due to changes in their health. Kamala was admitted to a private hospital in Mangalagiri on Tuesday. Nagmani, on the other hand, underwent treatment at a PHC on Fr
