Jake Gyllenhaal Reveals He Got Staph Infection While Filming Road House: 'My Whole Arm Swelled Up'

Jake Gyllenhaal did not walk away from filming his new Road House movie unscathed.

The actor stars in the upcoming remake of Patrick Swayze's 1989 action classic (premiering March 21 on Prime Video) as a former UFC fighter who becomes a bouncer at a dilapidated bar in the Florida Keys. There, he spends most of his time engaged in violent, bloody, bare-knuckle brawls. And, it turns out, some of that blood wasn't fake.

During an interview on Dax Shepard's Armchair Expert podcast alongside Road House cast member Conor McGregor, Gyllenhaal revealed that he cut his hand during a fight scene and ended up getting a staph infection. "We're fighting on the floor, fighting around tables, we're fighting around glass," Gyllenhaal said, adding that he "put [his] hand on the bar [on] f---ing straight glass."

"I felt the glass going in my hand," he said. "I remember the feeling [and] went, 'That's a lot of glass.'" Gyllenhaal said the cast dealt with "stuff like that all the time" while filming the many fight scenes, which is why he's not sure when exactly he contracted the staph infection. "My whole arm swelled up. It ended up being staph."

Despite the cut and infection, Gyllenhaal said he "didn't sustain any major injuries, [which was] a testament to the team I was working with ... Gratefully, I was really, really trying to take care of everything that we did, and my body while we were doing it."

Directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Mr. And Mrs. Smith), the new Road House also stars Post Malone, Billy Magnussen, Jessica Williams, Lukas Gage, Arturo Castro, Daniela Melchior, and Darren Barnet.

Jake Gyllenhaal Says Violently Fighting In Glass And On Dirty Floors In Road House Led To Him Getting A Staph Infection, And It Sounds Pretty Gross

The early word on Jake Gyllenhaal's Road House remake is that it's a solid action movie, and Gyllenhaal himself has hyped the film's action, claiming that the fight scenes were filmed in unique ways that we've never seen before. However, it wasn't all fun and games for the star, as Gyllenhaal says that he got a staph infection due to an injury on set that got pretty bad.

Speaking with EW, Jake Gyllenhaal detailed a fight sequence in a bar that included a lot of broken glass. At some point, he put his hand on the bar, and in doing so, he cut himself pretty badly on the glass. Gyllenhaal said…

[I] put [my] hand on the bar [on] fucking straight glass.

So… that's just awful. I'm not squeamish around blood or anything, but the idea of putting my hand directly on a sharp piece of glass is just about the worst thing I can think of.

Traditionally, special glass is used on movie sets designed to be a little less dangerous, but one can still cut themselves on it, so care is always taken. Gyllenhaal indicates that the wound from the broken glass was significant on its own, but that's not even the worst part. The real issue was what came later, as the actor began to show signs of infection. Luckily, the issue was treated and did not become a problem, which Gyllenhaal says is thanks to the Road House crew. He continued…

I felt the glass going in my hand. I remember the feeling [and] went, 'That's a lot of glass. My whole arm swelled up. It ended up being staph. [I] didn't sustain any major injuries, [which was] a testament to the team I was working with ... Gratefully, I was really, really trying to take care of everything that we did, and my body while we were doing it.

While an action movie like Road House certainly wants to look more dangerous than it is, sometimes injuries still happen. It's wonderful to hear that, while Jake Gyllenhaal didn't make it out of the movie unscathed, he was well taken of to ensure that nothing that happened had any lasting impact.

Jake Gyllenhaal seems very happy with the new Road House. The same can be said of the film's director, Doug Liman. He is so proud of Road House, believing it's "fantastic" and one of his best movies, that he refused to attend the movie's SXSW premiere because he's angry the movie did not get a theatrical release. However, not everybody is happy with Liman airing his grievances with Amazon.

With the Road House release date hitting this week, fans with a Prime Video subscription will get to see how the remake measures up and can try to figure out which scene in the movie is the one that gave the star a serious infection.

Maycee Barber Reveals She Spent Nine Days In The Hospital Following UFC 299 Win: "I Wasn't Sure If I Was Going To Be Okay"

Maycee Barber has revealed that she spent over a week in the hospital after her UFC 299 win over Katlyn Chookagian.

Maycee Barber

Barber picked up one of the biggest wins of her career as she beat the former flyweight title challenger. It was a solid performance from Barber who won by decision, but following the event, she dealt with plenty of adversity.

Maycee Barber revealed on Instagram that she was dealing with an infection that kept her in the hospital for nine days, and during that time, she wasn't sure if she was going to be okay.

"Well, the past few weeks were quite the ride and included lots of highs and lots of lows. Following my fight, I spent 9 days in the hospital being tested and treated for an infection that they thought were a mix of different things from Strep A to Staph. Being in the hospital and still not having a true definitive answer while battling a 105 degree fever for days, having extremely low blood pressure, HR, and oxygen, was incredibly hard. Despite having multiple IV antibiotics and medications over the course of several days, they were unable to get my fever to drop, which eventually led to me developing Pneumonia," Maycee Barber wrote on Instagram.

"It definitely wasn't what I had planned and was honestly very scary at times. There were a few moments where I wasn't sure if I was going to be okay, but I know that whatever happens was meant to happen and that it's all just another piece of the puzzle of life. Grateful for everyone who has been by my side through it all. Little scares like this make you really step back and appreciate those around you! God is good and I am blessed!," Barber continued.

The good news is that Maycee Barber is now okay, but she did say the week-and-a-half was a scary time for her.

With the win over Chookagian at UFC 299, Barber improved to 14-2 and is now on a six-fight winning streak. On the win streak, she holds wins over Amanda Ribas, Andrea Lee, and Miranda Maverick. Barber is currently ranked fourth at women's flyweight.
